2016-2017 Meningitis Vaccine School Requirements

New York State will be implementing the following meningitis vaccine (Menactra) requirements for the 2016-2017 school year:

  1. Prior to entering 7th grade, student must receive the 1st dose of the meningitis vaccine.
  2. Prior to entering 12th grade, student must receive the booster dose of the meningitis vaccine.*                                                                                                                                   *The only exception to this would be if the student received the 1st dose of the vaccine after their 16th birthday.

New York State is most concerned about the Grade 12 population, as there is a small percentage of students who have received the meningitis vaccine booster.

If your child has not received the required meningitis vaccine(s), you will receive a letter from your school district. In addition, you will receive a reminder phone call from Genesis Pediatrics to schedule a nurse visit.

In addition to scheduling nurse visits for these boosters, the providers at Genesis Pediatrics may suggest your child receive this vaccine when in the office for an acute visit or consultation whenever possible.

*IMPORTANT:  Please note that blood work to confirm immunity to these particular strains of the meningitis virus will not be permitted as an option to avoid receiving this required immunization.

PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE:

All refill requests for controlled substances (ie. stimulant medications) must go through the Patient Portal.
